For Claude

The people who know me know that I love to drive. I am not talking about the daily commute. I am talking about getting out on the road for a day and seeing what is out there. In Ohio I used to love to take a drive into the Hocking Hills. I would do that at least once a year by myself. I take after my Dad that way. This trip is for you Dad.

I have been wanting to do this all summer, but gas prices were too high. This week gas in Boise finally dropped below $3.00. So on Saturday I went for a good driving trip just over 300 miles according to my odometer. Here is the map of the route. The area I drove to is the northern part of the Sawtooth Mountains.

The first major stopping point was at Stanley Lake. This lake is about 125 miles from Boise. The picture is below is me and Abby at the lake and that is McGown Peak in the background.
There was a trail head at the lake so I took a 40 minute round trip hike. This is Abby on the trail. That is still McGown Peak as the back drop.
Here is a really cool video I took on that trail. I am not sure if the bird screaming is hawk or eagle but it is really cool. Julie thinks I sound like one of those outdoor adventure guys in this video.
Here is a second video. This video explains just how peaceful this trail was. Even with the fact that I encountered three other groups on the trail. After my hike, I went back to the first spot and had a quick boxed lunch. Then I left Stanley Lake and went into the town of Stanley to top off my gas tank. Then I drove 20 miles further down the road to get some more Sawtooth views before turning around and heading for home. The last video is a good shot that show off the Sawtooth Mountains.
This is the summary of my trip. I drove just over 300 miles. I was gone from Boise from 8:30 am to 3:45. The only wildlife spotted was the hawk or eagle, squirrels, and a beaver. I listened to parts of the following college football games on XM Texas Tech v Kansas, Northwestern v Indiana, Illinois v Wisconsin, and Georgia v LSU.
I had a great day. For the record, Julie was working and she would not have liked this much driving with no other real activity involved.
